Zone 13 Archerfish, Puffer fish,Spotted scat, Mono, Anableps Spotted scats can be found in tropical fresh, brackish and salt water. Young spotted scats tend to be found in freshwater and move towards salt water as they grow up. They are thought to live approx 20 years. In juvenile scats, spines in the dorsal (back), anal and pelvic fins are believed to be venomous and capable of inflicting wounds. Spotted scats are used in Chinese medicine. Anableps – Anableps Anableps
Also called four-eyed fish, anableps actually only have two eyes but each eye has two separate lenses (that share the same retina). Anableps swim at the surface of the water and the top part of each eye (the upper lens) sits above the water surface and the lower lens sits below. This allows the anablep to see above and below the water line. Anableps can survive on mud exposed to air during low tides and are one of only a few fish that bear live young. |
