Coral reefs are one of the most diverse habitats on earth, rivalled only by rainforests in terms of numbers of species. It is estimated that between 1 and 3 million species exist on coral reefs and approximately 1/3 of all species of fish live on them. Coral reefs represent just 1% of the oceans.

Coral reefs are under increasing threat due to the actions of man. These pressures include over-fishing, destructive fishing techniques, pollution and coral bleach as a result of global warming. It is estimated by experts that only 30% of the world's coral reefs will remain by 2050...

The London Aquarium runs a project which currently has over 28 corals all of which are being actively propagated. The project helps to conserve corals through captive propagation therefore removing the pressure on natural reefs. It also increases our knowledge of coral biology.
