The tanks are made out of a very strong, thick plastic.
How much water does the Aquarium hold? It holds 2.5 million litres.
How do you clean the tanks? Our staff dive into the tanks using scuba equipment and clean the tanks.

How many different varieties of fish are in the Aquarium? There are over 400 different species. Does the glass magnify the size of the animals? No, the viewing windows into the tanks are made of acrylic rather than glass, which is designed to alleviate magnification. Do sharks have to constantly swim?
No. Some species of shark, including the nurse shark, zebra shark, and lesser spotted dogfish we have here at the London Aquarium, can rest on the bottom for long periods of time. They are known as bottom-dwelling sharks. They can actively pump water over their gills and therefore obtain the oxygen they require. ![]() The two main tanks are some of the largest in the UK. The Pacific display holds approximately 1 million litres of water and the Atlantic tank holds 750,000 litres of water. Remaining tanks in the aquarium hold between 1,000 litres to 70,000 litres of water. |
